5 hidden tricks of the Quebec City junk removal industry (that are costing you money)

We’ve been working in the Quebec City residential removal market for years. And during consultations with new clients, we regularly hear statements like: “the last service tripled the price once on site”, “they called me 3 hours AFTER the pickup to say it was more expensive”, “I ended up paying $1,200 for something they quoted at $400 on the phone”. Here are the 5 actual tricks we see most often in 2026 — so you can identify them before you book.

Why this matters

Quebec City has 10-15 active companies in residential junk removal. Most are honest. But a minority use techniques that exploit stressed or first-time clients. In a moving context (your deadline is this Saturday), or a succession (you’re emotionally drained), you’re in a bad position to argue a bill.

Our best defence: know these tricks BEFORE you call.

Trick #1: “We’ll confirm the price on arrival”

Description: they give you a very low estimate on the phone ($150-200) without asking specific questions. You say yes. They arrive. They “see” the volume. They announce $650. You’ve already cleared your whole Saturday. They’re loading. What can you do?

How to spot it:

• Estimate that seems too good to be true (< $200 for a half-truck)
• No specific questions about volume, access, special items
• The phrase “we’ll confirm once on site” without naming a maximum

Defence: ask for a firm quote before the day. A serious service asks: number of pieces, photos if possible, apartment floor, parking access, special items. Refuse to confirm the booking until you have the firm price.

Trick #2: The “per minute” or “per hour” fee

Description: quote is advertised as “$99/hour” or “$2.50/minute”. You think: great, we finish in 1h, $99. On site, loading takes 1h15 because the clothes cabinet is wedged in the stairs. Billing: $150. But that’s not the worst — the truck travel time is often included. So from their warehouse in Vanier to your home in Beauport: 35 minutes each way = 70 extra minutes billed.

How to spot it: the quote is expressed per unit of time, never per volume.

Defence: ask “is travel time billed?” and “if you stretch the work by 30 minutes, is the price fixed or does it increase?” If the answer contains “depends” or “billed based on total time”, move on to another quote.

Trick #3: Surcharges announced AFTER loading

Description: firm price on the phone = $400 for 1/2 truck. They arrive. They load. Once the truck is FULL (they’ve built a Tetris), they explain: “unfortunately it’s a bit heavier than expected, there’s a $75 overweight surcharge.” Or “the mattress isn’t included in the basic service, that’s $45 extra.” Or “the stairs add 15% per additional floor.” Suddenly, $400 → $555.

How to spot it: ask on the phone:

• “What’s INCLUDED in the quoted price?”
• “What isn’t included?”
• “Are there floor/distance/item-type surcharges?”

The answer should be CONCRETE. Example: “Our $499 price includes 1/2 truck = 12 cubic yards, up to ground floor + garage. 1st floor: +$30. Basement: +$40. Piano: +$80. Hot tub: custom quote.”

Defence: insist on getting the surcharge grid in writing by text or email BEFORE the day. If they refuse, don’t book.

Trick #4: The “extra truck” without warning

Description: you were quoted “1 truck” for $800. They arrive, load, and notice 2/3 through: “it won’t all fit.” They announce: “we’ll send a 2nd truck, it’s $600 additional.” You accept, you have no choice, they’ve already loaded everything in the hall. Final bill: $1,400.

How to spot it:

• Quote given by phone without visual or accurate photo estimation
• No clear communication about probable volume

Defence:

• Send photos before the quote. A serious company analyzes photos and gives an accurate estimate.
• Ask: “what happens if the volume is bigger than estimated on site?” Expected answer: “we tell you before loading, you decide if we take the excess at X $ extra, or if you keep it for another day.”

Trick #5: Cash payment demand

Description: they arrive, work, and once the truck is loaded: “we only take cash.” You don’t have it at home. They offer to drive you to the ATM with them. On site, they insist on $200+ cash in bills so they can not declare it. In addition to being disrespectful of our Québec fiscal ecosystem, this practice is an indicator of an unserious company (no corporate insurance, no workplace accident protection, no after-sales recourse if damage).

How to spot it:

• Company without website, Facebook page with few reviews
• “Special cash price” advertised on the phone
• No quote by email, only verbal

Defence: pay by Interac e-Transfer or credit card. A serious company accepts all payment methods and issues a proper invoice. For a simple residential junk removal, this protects you in case of post-pickup damage or forgotten item.

The 3 questions to ask BEFORE booking

Whatever service you choose (us or competitors), ALWAYS ask:

1. “What’s the FIRM price for my volume, all-inclusive?” — refuse “starting at” or “from”
2. “What can make this price go up on site?” — they must list them ALL
3. “What are the payment methods accepted, and do you issue an invoice?”

If they hesitate on any of these 3 questions, move on.
