Fridges, freezers and air conditioners: refrigerant gases
Refrigerant gases (freon, R-134a and other halocarbons) must never be vented into the air. So every cooling appliance — fridge, freezer, air conditioner, water cooler — goes through a certified recovery centre before recycling.
In Québec, appliance recycling falls under extended producer responsibility. The recognized organization for household appliances is GoRecycle: it covers fridges, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, stoves, dishwashers, washers and dryers (details on RECYC-QUÉBEC’s site, in French).
Disconnection: what we do and don’t do
We can unplug a standard electrical outlet, but not plumbing connections or gas lines. For a dishwasher or washer, close the valves and disconnect before we arrive. A gas stove must be disconnected by a qualified professional before we come. Built-in appliances (wall oven, integrated fridge) must already be taken out.
Your options for an old appliance in Quebec City
Still works? Consider donating it. Working appliances, even old ones, can go to organizations that refurbish them for families in need. We can handle that on request, with proof.

The city’s bulky item collection (free). By booking through 311, with a separate request for cooling appliances. You take the appliance outside yourself — at the curb or near the container, and near the building for a cooling appliance, with its door removed or secured so nobody can get trapped.
Our pickup (paid) takes over when the appliance is in the basement or upstairs, when there are several, or when it has to go quickly — for example the day the new one is delivered. We carry it out of your home: you don’t have to drag it outside.
Getting ready for pickup
- Empty and defrost the fridge or freezer the night before, door open. It saves you a puddle on the stairs.
- Disconnect and close the valves on the washer or dishwasher. For a gas stove, call a professional.
- Measure the way out — doors, frames, stair turns — and mention them when you ask for a quote.

- Tell us if it still works: we can send it to a charity instead of recycling.
