What a Quebec City ecocentre actually is

An ecocentre is a municipal facility that accepts household residual materials that don’t fit in regular garbage pickup: bulky items (furniture), construction debris, electronics, metals, mattresses (sometimes), green waste, etc.

In Quebec City, it’s FREE for residents on presentation of proof of residence (driver’s license or utility bill) — within usage limits (typically 4 visits per year of less than 2 cubic metres).

Beyond that, you pay per use based on volume.

The 4 main ecocentres (Quebec City territory)

1. Écocentre Beauport (Prévost)

• Address: 1500 Boulevard Raymond, Beauport (QC), G1C 5K8
• Winter hours (Nov–Mar): Mon-Sun 8 AM – 4:30 PM
• Summer hours (Apr–Oct): Mon-Sun 7 AM – 5:30 PM
• Capacity: 2 m³ free per visit × 4/year
• Accepts: all classic ecocentre materials (see “general list” below)
• Refuses: hazardous materials (RDD) — those go to Vanier

Our opinion: the most accessible ecocentre for east Quebec City, decent capacity, efficient on weekends.

2. Écocentre Jean-Paul-L’Allier (Saint-Roch / Limoilou)

• Address: 151 Rue du Marché-Champlain, Saint-Roch neighbourhood
• Hours: Mon–Fri 9 AM – 5:30 PM, Sat–Sun 8 AM – 5 PM
• Specifics: the best one for small electronics, computers, free donation to Renaissance on site
• Refuses: large volumes of construction debris (directed to Beauport instead)

Our opinion: ideal if you live downtown + small volume. Walking access possible for a few items.

3. Écocentre Raymond-Blais (Sainte-Foy)

• Address: 200 Rue de la Condorée, Ste-Foy
• Hours: Mon–Sun 7 AM – 5 PM (identical summer/winter)
• Specifics: large capacity for construction debris. Accepts concrete, bricks, asphalt shingles.
• Refuses: fiberglass insulation (goes to Vanier)

Our opinion: the renovator’s ecocentre. Busier than others.

4. Écocentre Val-Bélair (Charlesbourg/Val-Bélair)

• Address: 1650 Rue Joseph-Ghio, Val-Bélair
• Hours: Mon-Sun 8 AM – 5 PM
• Specifics: large parking, accepts branches and green waste in large quantities
• Refuses: small hazardous waste

Our opinion: best for projects involving landscape waste (branches, old sod, etc.).

Special ecocentre — Vanier RDD

For hazardous household waste (paint, batteries, thermometers, old electronics, etc.), everything goes to Vanier specifically:

• Address: 760 Rue du Père-Lelièvre, Vanier
• Hours: Mon–Fri 10 AM – 6:30 PM, Sat 9 AM – 5 PM, Sun 9 AM – 1 PM
• Limit: 50 L per visit for paint, 20 L for chemical products

Hidden traps to know

1. Ecocentre “closed for lack of space”

Yes, it happens. On a busy Saturday, Ste-Foy or Beauport can refuse arrivals mid-afternoon. Arrive before 10 AM on weekends.

2. Under-declared volume = refused

Ecocentre staff look at your load. If you declare “<2 m³” but arrive with a pickup loaded to the brim, expect a reassessment and a charge.

3. Residue left on your vehicle

Don’t forget to bring a broom if you’re loading sand, earth, concrete. Ecocentres don’t clean up your vehicle.

4. “Mixed” loads

If you mix categories (furniture + construction + green waste), they may direct you to multiple zones on site. Plan 30-45 minutes rather than 10.
