How mattress removal works in Quebec City

We pick up your old mattress in Quebec City, any size and any condition — even stained, sagging or broken. We carry it down ourselves, even on narrow stairs, and it goes through the sorting included in every pickup: donation, recycling or drop-off centre, depending on its condition. Box springs, bed frames and sofa beds go in the same trip.

A mattress is 15 to 50 kg of springs, foam and fabric that’s hard to fold and hard to grip. It’s often the thing that stays in the basement because nobody can get it out alone.

Your options for an old mattress in Quebec City

Donate it? Rarely possible. Most charities turn down used mattresses for hygiene reasons. Our guide to donating furniture in Quebec City explains who takes what.

Drop it off at an ecocentre (free). Quebec City’s ecocentres accept residents’ mattresses with photo ID and proof of residence. You need a vehicle big enough and someone to help you unload: staff aren’t allowed to. Addresses and hours are in our guide to Quebec City ecocentres.

The city’s bulky item collection (free). Mattresses qualify, by booking through 311. You carry it to the curb yourself, after 7 p.m. the night before or before 7 a.m. on collection day. If you can, wrap it in a plastic cover so it doesn’t soak up rain.

Our pickup (paid) is the right option when:

  • the mattress is upstairs or in the basement and nobody can carry it down;
  • you’re on a deadline: moving, end of lease, selling the house;
  • there are other items to clear in the same trip — bed frame, dresser, boxes;
  • the mattress has been exposed to bed bugs.

Mattresses with bed bugs: our procedure

If your mattress has been exposed to bed bugs, we can still help, with a specific procedure:

  • airtight wrapping on site (we bring the supplies);
  • transported separately from other items;
  • safe disposal: recyclers refuse infested mattresses, so they are never recycled;
  • a $75 surcharge.

Tell us when you ask for a quote: that’s how we show up equipped and keep the bugs from travelling elsewhere in your home.

Getting ready for pickup

  1. Strip the bedding and any washable covers you want to keep.
  2. Tell us the size (single, double, queen or king) and the floor. A king on a winding staircase takes planning.
  3. Flag the bed frame to take apart. Disassembly is part of the service.
  4. Group the other items that need to go: one trip costs less than two.

The price of a mattress and a box spring is listed line by line in the calculator on our pricing page. Clearing a whole bedroom? See our furniture removal service.

Frequently asked questions about this service

My mattress has bed bugs. Do you take it?

Yes, with special procedure: hermetic wrapping on-site by us, $75 surcharge for decontamination and extra recycling centre fees.

Do you come just for one mattress?

Yes. $149 for a single item: the box spring or a second item is included in that price. To save, group other items in the same visit (dresser, boxes, old sofa).

What's Recyc-Matelas?

A private Québec company, based in Pointe-Claire, that takes mattresses apart to recycle the steel, foam, fabric and wood. It isn't a government program: in Québec, mattresses aren't covered by extended producer responsibility programs. In Quebec City, the city accepts them free of charge at its ecocentres and through its bulky item collection.

Does it include sofa-bed pickup?

Yes. A sofa bed counts as 2 items (base + mattress): it fits within the single-item rate, $149.

Why can't I just leave my mattress at the curb for garbage pickup?

Most Quebec City boroughs won't take mattresses with regular collection, and bulky-item pickup is limited and slow to book. We come when it suits you and haul it straight to RecycMatelas, so it's handled properly instead of sitting on your lawn for weeks.

Do you take the box spring and bed frame at the same time?

Yes. The box spring goes to RecycMatelas with the mattress and its wood gets recycled, and we take metal or wood frames too. A mattress and its box spring count as two items, so the pair stays within the $149 single-item rate.

My mattress is really old and stained — will you still take it?

Yes, condition doesn't matter. Stained, sagging, torn or decades old, RecycMatelas still breaks it down for the metal, foam and fabric. The only mattress we handle differently is one with bed bugs, which needs the wrapping procedure and a surcharge.
